If you're a recreational soccer parent in North Texas, you've likely heard the whispers: "Are you going to tryouts?" "Which club has the best fields?" "Did you hear about the June 1st deadline?"
In North Texas, the transition to competitive soccer can feel overwhelming if you don't know the rules. We're here to simplify the chaos.
Suddenly, your calm spring Saturdays turn into a flurry of research. In North Texas, we call this Mayhem in May. This is the high-stakes period when "Rec" becomes "Select," and your family's calendar for the next year is decided in days.
But don't panic. Here is everything you need to know to survive the gauntlet and find the right "Pitch" for your player.
What Are Tryouts, Really?
In North Texas, tryouts are the official evaluation window for competitive (Select/Club) soccer. Unlike recreational ball where everyone gets a spot, competitive clubs "form" teams based on skill, speed, and potential. During the last two weeks of May and through June, clubs hold "open practice" sessions—essentially tryouts where coaches decide who they want to offer spots to.
The Purpose of Open Practices
For Players:Train with the actual team, see the coaching style, meet teammates, and check the vibe.
For Coaches:Informal evaluation—how a player handles drills, listens to instructions, and fits the team dynamic.
For Parents:Observe sideline culture, talk to current parents, check practice field locations, and gauge coach communication.
Why "Signing Day" Matters
There's a "blackout period"—coaches can talk to you but can't officially sign you until the designated day: July 1st for US Club Soccer/USYS or June 1st for NTSSA. Rosters fill fast—18 spots can close on day one.
Decoding "The Offer"
Time Limit: Offers often come with a 24–48 hour expiration.
The Pressure: You may get a Plan B offer while waiting on Plan A.
Be Prepared: Use our Club & Coach Directory to vet options before the first whistle.
The Commitment: More Than a Signature
Signing means a year-long commitment (Aug 1 – May 31): monthly dues, team fees, weekend travel, and the "no-transfer" rule. Make sure this is the pitch you want to call home.
-
Before the first whistle blows, remember: You are the customer. Competitive soccer is a massive commitment—emotionally, physically, and financially. You're hiring a professional to mentor your child for ten months. Vet them like you would any major investment.
The Growth-Focused Interview
Ask the coach these questions:
"What is your specific plan for individual player development this year?"
"How do you handle playing time during league games vs. tournaments?"
"What is the team's style of play—building from the back, or long ball?"
The Culture Recon: Find Your Soccer Family
You're joining a community. Watch how coaches handle mistakes—constructive or critical? Are sideline parents welcoming or tense? If the vibe feels off during a May water break, it'll be ten times worse during a freezing November tournament.
Pro Tip: Stay cool, stay supportive, and keep coaching instructions to yourself. Coaches evaluate parents too—"low-maintenance" families who support without drama are much more attractive signings.
-
You're about to sign a legally binding, one-year contract. Mid-season transfers involve sit-out periods and hefty release fees. To avoid "Buyer's Remorse" in October, treat this as your due diligence phase.
🚗 The "Drive-Time" Reality Check
An "Elite" team sounds great until you're fighting I-75 traffic three nights a week. Does the level justify 10+ hours/week in the car?
📋 The Roster Stability Test
10 returning players with 2 open spots = stable family. 9 new players needed = rebuild. Both are fine—just know which you're paying for.
-
Evaluate at least three different clubs during open practices. Use a standardized checklist to take emotion out of the decision.
💰 The Budget Breakdown
Compare "all-in" costs. Club A may have lower dues but require three out-of-state tournaments. Club B has higher dues but plays entirely in DFW. Hidden travel costs can double your season price.
🏆 PPFC Sideline Secret: The "best" team isn't the one with the most trophies—it's the one where your kid develops, you enjoy the other parents, and your SUV survives the season.
-
A side-by-side scoring system to help you objectively compare clubs, cut through the noise, and confidently choose the right fit for your player.
Use the Club Comparison Doc to evaluate each option against the same criteria—coaching, culture, cost, commute, and commitment.
-
This process isn't just for adults. Engaging your player helps them learn decision-making and understand the weight of their commitment.
Questions for Your Player:
What do you value most or want most out of a club?
What is your main soccer focus and goal for this season?
What traits in a coach help you learn and develop best?
What is your long-term goal with soccer?
How will you prove your dedication to a year-long contract?
-
Once your player has reflected on their goals, put down the pens and have a real conversation together.
Top 3 Questions to Discuss:
"Which coach made you feel like you learned something new in just one hour?"
Identifies the best developmental fit
"Are we okay with saying 'no' to other things to make this schedule work?"
Addresses the reality of commitment
"If you had to play with these teammates every day for a year, which group would you choose?"
Identifies the community fit
🏆 PPFC Sideline Secret: If a coach has four different teams and no clear assistant, you're likely paying for a coach who will miss 25% of your games. Make sure the backup plan is someone you trust.
